A comprehensive Learn to Sail programme for both juniors and seniors is conducted at the club. The juniors learn in the easy-to-sail and very popular Optimist sailing dinghy, and the adult programme is conducted using a fleet of Sunburst two-person yachts. There is also a few places places available for young people in their mid-teens who have not sailed before or with limited sailing experience to train in the Sunburst yachts.
In the junior programme, children from as young as 10 years old are taught self-confidence, boat-handling skills such as righting a capsized boat, sailing around the course and reading the wind. All applicants must be able to swim 50 metres while wearing a life jacket, tests being conducted at the Porirua Police Training College.
All training is conducted by experienced instructors and sailors, with rescue boats on the water at all times to monitor safety and provide on-the-water instruction. Theory and tactics are also covered
Boats are provided for the Learn to Sail programme,
which are also available for hire on a limited-time basis. Once junior sailors progress to the Optimist "B" division,
they are expected to provide their own boats. A number of reasonably-priced boats are usually for sale at the club
advertised on the website or on the noticeboard.
Please note the Club is unfortunately unable to offer a Senior Learn-to-sail programme this season (2007-2008).
