Optimist Green Fleet
When sailors have completed YNZ Level 2 skills, they can move into the Optimist Green
Fleet, where they build on their sailing skills and learn more of the finer points of boat
handling and racing. During this stage, sailors work through Yachting New Zealand Level 3 skills while continuing to enjoy sailing with their friends.
Green Fleet coaching takes place on Friday nights from 4.30-7.15pm. Sailors may also take part in Sunday club sailing once their coach advises they are ready, and when the weather allows. Details of our club racing can be found on our website.
Green Fleet sailors are encouraged to attend local regattas and may also enjoy the Titahi Bay OptiSail camp. The focus remains on fun, confidence, and continued skill development.
Boats and Parent Support
Sailors are expected to have their own fibreglass boats for Green Fleet sailing. Parents are encouraged to be involved, It is helpful if parents learn how to rig the boats so that they can support thier sailors if required. Parents will need to maintain their sailors Optimist and make repairs and replacements as needed.
It helps if the sailors can arrive on time and dressed ready to sail. Sailors will return to the club around 6.45pm and the sailors will have a debrief with their coach, then need to wash and pack away their boats and change. Parent support at this time is appreciate.
Parents can observe the sailing close up by crewing a support boat. There are always jobs to be done around the club – just ask.
