​​​​​​​Optimist White Fleet

White Fleet is for sailors who have completed Yachting New Zealand Level 4  skills. The
focus is on more advanced boat handling, speed, racing skills and tactics.  White Fleet coaching takes place on Friday evenings 4.30-7.15pm.  Sailors will aim to be back at the club by 6.45pm for a debrief, boat washing and pack up and changing.  A club meal is available after Friday Night sailing.

Skill Development and Racing

Sailors learn to fine-tune their boats and sail confidently in a range of conditions. They are
encouraged to take part in local and away regattas and may choose to work toward national level events.

Sailors who are keen to compete more regularly may be invited to join an additional evening of race coaching through the Race Squad.


Sunday club racing is recommended for White Fleet sailors, as it gives them the opportunity to practise the skills they are developing during coaching.  Further infomation about Sunday racing can be found on our webiste

Boats and Parent Support
Sailors are expected to keep their Optimist in good race-ready condition and may need to
upgrade some parts. Parents are encouraged to be involved and may need to help with
basic boat maintenance and crew on support boats. Parents are responsible for organising transportation of Optimists and sailors to events – club trailers can be borrowed if required.

Equipment

  • Warm clothing - wetsuit, thermals, windproof jacket, hat, towel, change of clothes, closed toe shoes that will get wet, gloves.
  • Own Buoyancy aid.
  • Own fiberglass boat with buoyancy bags, mast clamp, bailer, paddle and tow rope.
  • Sailing Start Watch is now recommended.
  • Hiking pants - optional
  • Sailing Helmet - optional
  • Notebook and pen

Cost and Terms

White Fleet coaching sessions on Friday nights cost $110 per term.

  • Term 1: October–Christmas
  • Term 2: February–April
  • Friday night club night is always on. Onshore training will take place if sailing is not possible.

Junior community notices are posted on the Junior Community WhatsApp group, White fleet specific information and photos will be share on the White Fleet WhatsApp Group. Club information, celebrations and cancelations can be found on the Facebook Group and Instagram Page.
