Optimist Rainbow Fleet

The Optimist Rainbow Fleet is the next step for sailors who have reciently completed Learn to Sail. Sailors join a small coaching group on Friday evenings, 4.30pm - 7.15pm where they continue to build their confidence, skills, and knowledge in a supportive environment. Coaches assist sailors throughout each session, with a focus on fun, safety, and developing good sailing habits.  


Boats and Parent Support

Rainbow Fleet sailors may continue to use the club’s plastic Optimist boats during their first term in the fleet. After that, families are encouraged to purchase their own fibreglass Optimist, as priority for club boats will be given to the next group of Learn to Sail sailors.In the Rainbow Fleet, sailors work through Yachting New Zealand Level 2 skills. 

Parent involvement is welcomed on and off the water. Parents are encouraged to learn how to rig the boats and tie the knots so they can support their sailors, help with putting the boats away after sailing is appreciated. Parents can observe the sailing close up by crewing a support boat. There are always jobs to be done around the club – just ask.

It helps if the sailors can arrive on time and dressed ready to sail.  Sailors will return to the club around 6.45pm and the sailors will have a debrief with their coach, then need to wash and pack away their boats and change.  Parent support at this time is appreciated.


Equipment

  • Warm clothing - wetsuit, thermals, windproof jacket, hat, towel, change of clothes, closed toe shoes that will get wet, gloves.
  • Buoyancy aid - sailors in Rainbow Fleet are encouraged to buy their own Personal Flotation Device (PFD) buoyancy aid. Check the size is matched to your sailor, no collars.
  • Rainbow fleet sailors can start the season using club plastic optimist boats; however they are encouraged to begin to look for their own fiberglass boat at the end of the first term.  These can be purchased second hand on trade or Facebook and also ask at the club. Ask your coach for further information and assistance.


Sailing Opportunities

  • Friday evening coaching 4.30pm - 7.15pm 
  • Encouragement to attend the fun summer residential OptiSail course at Titahi Bay in January,
  • Possible supported Sunday racing in the second half of the season, when the weather is suitable and if sailors are ready.


​​​​​​​Cost and Terms

Rainbow Fleet coaching sessions on Friday nights cost $110 per term. Sunday racing is
included with membership. Opti sail camp and regattas are optional at additional costs.

  • Term 1: October–Christmas
  • Term 2: February–April
  • Friday night club night is always on. Onshore training will take place if sailing is not possible.

Junior community notices are posted on the Junior Community WhatsApp group, Rainbow fleet specific information and photos will be share on the Rainbow Fleet WhatsApp Group. Club information, celebrations and cancelations can be found on the Facebook Group and Instagram Page.
