Race Squad
Race Squad is for junior sailors who are strongly committed to sailing and want to accelerate their development. Sailors are expected to compete in most local Wellington regattas, as well as selected away regattas. Race Squad members are also expected to train on Friday nights and race on Sundays as often as possible. Members of Race Squad with the support of their parents, commit to an additional training night on Tuesdays from 4.30-7.15pm
Training Expectations
Race Squad sailors are expected to arrive promptly, rig independently, and be ready for
briefing before each session. There is a strong focus on being regatta-ready through both
on- and off-the-water training, which may include physical training, technical theory, race
strategy, and understanding and applying rules. At major away regattas, sailors compete
against large, strong fleets, and they will learn strategies to support them in these more
challenging conditions.
Boats and Parent Support
Sailors are expected to keep their Optimist in good race-ready condition and may need to
upgrade some parts. Parents are encouraged to be involved and may need to help with
sailing boat maintenance and crew on support boats. Parents may like to become familiar
with Optimist tuning guides and learn how to help their sailors set up their boats for the
conditions. Parents are responsible for organising transportation of Optimists and sailors to events – club trailers can be borrowed if required. It is requested that, for each regatta, one parent take a lead role in co-ordinating the team (transport, accommodation, shared meals, communication).
