Youth Improvers
Youth Improvers takes place on Wednesday evenings 4.30-7.15pm and is designed for sailors who want to develop their skills in larger boats such as the ILCA or Starling. Most sailors in this group are aged 15–19 and have several years of sailing experience.
Coaching Focus
The programme supports each sailor’s individual goals and may include working through the relevant Yachting New Zealand skill sheets. Sailors will also develop race strategy and
racing skills, with Sunday racing encouraged where appropriate.
Sailors may also choose to take part in local or national regattas. Individual goals will be
discussed with the coach, who will support each sailor’s unique sailing journey.
Equipment
- Warm clothing - wetsuit, thermals, windproof jacket, hat, towel, change of cloths, shoes that will get wet, gloves.
- Own Buoyancy aid.
- Own boat (ILCA, Starling or similar - check with your coach) A try before you buy 4 sail hire ticket can be purchased to use club boats on 4 occasions to help you decide what is right for you.
- Consider a race sail and other upgrades.
- Sailing Start Watch
- Hiking pants/pads - optional
- Sailing Helmet - optional
Cost and Terms
Youth Improvers coaching sessions on Wednesday nights cost $110 per term.
- Term 1: October–Christmas
- Term 2: February–April
- Wednesday night is always on. Onshore training will take place if sailing is not possible.

Junior community notices are posted on the Junior Community WhatsApp group, Youth Improvers specific information and photos will be share on the Youth Improvers Fleet WhatsApp Group. Club information, celebrations and cancelations can be found on the Facebook Group and Instagram Page. The Newsletter (via email) also provides detailed information, dates and updates.
